What is kundalini yoga?
Kundalini yoga is designed to activate and balance the energy centres in your body (also called ‘chakras’), promoting physical health, emotional stability, intuition and spiritual growth.
It combines physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation and sound to awaken the dormant energy believed to reside at the base of the spine, known as kundalini. This ancient form of yoga focuses on harnessing this powerful energy to achieve heightened consciousness.
From my own personal experience, I find the yoga to be helpful in creating a meditative mindset, resulting in the relaxation section of the yoga classes being deeply restorative. It’s common by the end of the class to feel lighter, more positive and energised for the rest of your day.
There’s lots more information about Kundalini yoga on this website, a good starting place is the ‘about kundalini yoga‘ page.
How physically demanding is it?
This class will be a gentle introduction. Whilst kundalini yoga can be physically challenging (in a good way!), this is planned to be suitable for beginners – even those who have never done any form of yoga.
You will be asked to sit and / or kneel on a mat for most of the class – if you’re unable to sit cross-legged then you’re welcome to adjust the seating position so that you’re comfortable. You will also be invited to lie down on your back on the mat for the relaxation part of the class.
For the movements whilst you’ll be shown how to to do the full range of motion within a given posture, I always encourage people to only do as much as feels approachable for them taking into account any injuries or personal limitations.

What to bring with you
Wear comfortable clothing suitable for yoga that you’re happy to sit on a mat on the floor wearing (e.g. leggings or loose trousers). The amount of movement will vary throughout the class, so wearing layers so that you can adjust depending on how warm or cold you feel would be suitable.
During the class you will be either sitting, kneeling or lying on a yoga mat, so if you need support in order to do this – or you’d just like to make it more comfortable! – then please feel free to bring any blocks or cushions with you that will make you more comfortable for this.
Yoga mats will be provided, however if you have your own that you prefer to use for yoga, please feel free to bring it.
We will do a relaxation section of the yoga class where you’ll be invited to lie down and close your eyes whilst some calming music will be played. I always invite people to bring a blanket to pull over themselves for this to make it more cosy and calming – however you’re welcome to also just lay out on the mat.
A water bottle to keep you hydrated is a great idea. If you’re like me and breathwork can make your nose run, then bring some tissues 🙂
